What is the meaning and history of scrubs? The term “scrubs” is a relatively modern one referring to the shirts, pants, jacket, and even head coverings worn by nurses, surgeons, and others who have to be antiseptically clean, or “scrubbed down”, when working in an operating room.
Prior to the 20th century, there were no particular uniforms or garments associated with physicians and nurses. (Although surgeons might be found wearing a butcher's apron, for obvious reasons!)
